Pileated Woodpecker

Sanibel Island has 6,400 acres of land (two thirds of the island) that is protected from development as the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife everywhere on Sanibel has special status; the entire island is a bird sanctuary. The Pileated Woodpecker obviously feels at home here, and they are commonly seen around the island.

Wonderful to live in a bird sanctuary. We used to get visitors on our island but the cameras were never available in the way they are now.

They are impressive birds. I haven't seen one for a couple years now. I know that they are often mistaken as ivory bills. (Haven't seen one of those in a couple years either!)

That woodpecker is a fine looking bird. We don't have them here in New Zealand. - Dave

Sanibel Island does look like a beautiful place to visit and take wildlife photos. I may take your advice, especially during the winter months.
