Sanibel Island has 6,400 acres of land (two thirds of the island) that is protected from development as the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife everywhere on Sanibel has special status; the entire island is a bird sanctuary. The Pileated Woodpecker obviously feels at home here, and they are commonly seen around the island.

Love it. What a great shot .. thanks!
Great shots! How ever did you get so close?
Wonderful to live in a bird sanctuary. We used to get visitors on our island but the cameras were never available in the way they are now.
that's a very pretty bird!
Isn't he handsome! Great captures!
Beautiful. I've had very little luck getting any bird shots. Good for you!
This is a beautiful woodpecker. Very nice pictures.
They are impressive birds. I haven't seen one for a couple years now. I know that they are often mistaken as ivory bills. (Haven't seen one of those in a couple years either!)
I never tire of watching them sk
Wow! That's a nice find.
Wow... I really feel jealous of people who are near the great wildlife. Nice shot!

That woodpecker is a fine looking bird. We don't have them here in New Zealand. - Dave
Sanibel Island does look like a beautiful place to visit and take wildlife photos. I may take your advice, especially during the winter months.
Have a wonderful winter Season...
